Occasionally, when people call to schedule a massage, they tell us that they only want to see a female therapist. Whenever someone informs us of this, we do our utmost to accommodate their preference, as we have both male and female massage therapists on our staff. We understand that some people just feel uncomfortable with a male massage therapist, but I would like to take a moment to maybe clarify the intention of any good therapist, male or female, and hopefully, address some of the reluctance to schedule with a male practitioner
On an episode of The Simpsons, Homer once described massage therapists as “the half-doctors, half-hookers who solve everything.” While a funny line, it caused me to wonder when and how massage became associated with sex. Perhaps it was the advent of “massage parlors” in the 70’s and 80’s that gave the massage industry the aura of sexuality. My father-in-law spent his entire career working for the YMCA. And back in the days of the 50’s and 60’s, a majority of massage therapists were male. As a boy, my husband remembers his father getting a massage every Friday at the Y; no one thought anything about the fact that the therapist was usually a man.
A good therapist is looking at your body as muscles, tendons, joints and attachments. Have you ever seen a medical or a science textbook that has the clear overlays that show the skeletal system, the nerve system, the muscular system? Well, when a therapist looks at your body, they aren’t looking at you the way you would look at yourself in the mirror. They’re more focused on what’s going on under your skin rather than what’s on the surface. Even if Angelina and Brad showed up for a massage, we really would be more interested in their insides than their outsides.
Every therapist that works at Indulgences has been vetted both personally and professionally to assure you that nothing untoward will ever occur when you are in our treatment room. So next time you need a massage and you are given the option of a male therapist, we hope you will give him a try; there is a good chance that you will be pleasantly surprised by what you find.
