One of the new amenities we now offer is our fabulous steam room. Including a steam room in our design was a big ticket item to our budget, but the benefits it offers made it completely worth the investment. The origins of the steam room can be traced to the ancient Romans and Greeks; a ritual that was a part of the Roman baths. These baths were an essential and important element of the community, used for enjoyment, spirituality, pleasure, fulfillment, nature, and routine. No matter which socio-economic class you were in, you could or would participate in this social norm, as everyone in the Roman Empire used the public baths. Steam is still an important part of many cultures and religions, from the famed Turkish baths to Native American sweat lodges.
What are the benefits of using a steam room? Moist heat softens muscle tissue and soothes the joints. Steaming prior to massage will allow the therapist to work more effectively, since the muscles are more pliable and less resistant to manipulation. Steam is also quite relaxing; taking a few moments for yourself to unwind in a warm, quiet place goes a long way in reducing the day to day stresses we all experience.
The atmosphere of a steam room is great for moisturizing the skin and for releasing toxins from the body. The high humidity can also help with any lung issues you may be having, especially those caused by asthma or allergies. (That being said, we ask that you not use our steam room if you are in the midst of the active period of an illness, such as a cold or the flu). Some people believe that by raising the core body temperature, the body is purged and the immune system is stimulated. Please note that if you are pregnant, it is not recommended that you indulge in the steam room, since that will raise your core body temperature – not good for incubating babies. Also, if you have a heart or a lung condition, you may want to check with your physician prior to using a steam room to make sure it’s okay.
We hope that you will take the time to schedule a massage soon and that when you do, you will come a bit earlier to experience the benefits of a good steam. Come see for yourself why steam has been a holistic part of history for thousands of years.
